The wavelength dependence of the daytime performance of free-space quantum channels is crucial to global-scale quantum networking, but has been relatively unexplored, due to a lack of expertise in atmospheric physics among quantum optics researchers. This study makes progress by simulating quantum key distribution at different wavelengths, under daytime spectral radiance and atmospheric turbulence. Even in the face of multiple unfavorable factors, it is found that shorter wavelengths can nonetheless outperform longer ones. The framework and insights of this study are expected to have strong impact, and to serve as stepping stones for analyzing more complex quantum networking protocols.

Spin-Injection Enhancements in van der Waals Magnetic Tunnel Junctions through Barrier Engineering

Phys. Rev. Applied 16, L041001 (2021) - Published 15 October, 2021

Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) composed of different two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising for spin-valve applications. However, as the number of material combinations grows, guiding principles for heterostructure composition-property relationships become very desirable. The authors use first-principles calculations to provide design guidelines for spin-dependent transport in MTJs, based on the bulk properties of the constituent 2D materials, and find that low-work-function electrodes enable greater performance with CrI3 channels. This data-driven scheme offers a fast, systematic method to accelerate the design of spintronic devices based on 2D materials.

Influence of Disorder and State Filling on Charge-Transfer-State Absorption and Emission Spectra

Phys. Rev. Applied 16, 044026 (2021) - Published 15 October, 2021

Characterizing the energetic disorder of the charge-transfer (CT) state is crucial to understanding organic photovoltaic devices, but is complicated by the discrepancy between temperature-dependent absorption and emission spectra. The authors show that, unlike absorption measurements, electroluminescence measurements do not reveal the full extent of the CT-state distribution at low temperatures. In a highly disordered blend, CT-state filling is incomplete, and injected carriers do not reach equilibrium sites before recombining. CT disorder can be reliably found from temperature-dependent measurements of external quantum efficiency, which can distinguish dynamic from static disorder.
