Ultrabroadband reflectionless absorption of light is in great demand for many applications. This study proposes a type of nonresonant, impedance-matched optical metasurface that exhibits ultrabroadband reflectionless absorption, based on the anomalous Brewster effect. Extremely asymmetric behavior—a transition from perfect transparency to perfect absorption—appears when the sign of the angle of incidence changes, due to the coexistence of the traditional and anomalous Brewster effects. Such high-efficiency metasurfaces may find application in optoelectronic and thermal devices such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, and thermal emitters.

Does Nature take something away with one hand and give it back with the other? Yes, in the case of acoustic absorption. The causality principle has been regarded as the reason one needs thick, bulky absorbers for low-frequency noise remediation. By judicious manipulation of the boundary condition on the backside of the absorber, the authors obtain broadband near-total absorption below 100 Hz with a 2-cm-thick sample, when the causal minimum is 15 cm. This complements metamaterial absorbers that are within the causal limit and effective at higher frequencies, yielding a holistic picture of the acoustic absorber design landscape, over the entire frequency range.

Cooling fragile quantum systems requires quantum cooling technology. The smallest possible fridge employs a three-level system to autonomously cool the coldest of the three reservoirs. The authors suggest a setup with a quantum working fluid composed of N collectively coupled qubits to effectively implement such a refrigerator. The collective couplings lead to a quadratic boost of the cooling current, I∝N2.

Phys. Rev. Applied 16, L041003 (2021) - Published 28 October, 2021

Magnetic nanoparticles are of great interest for a variety of applications, ranging from medical diagnosis and treatment to information storage and genetic engineering. Their key property is that their magnetization can be manipulated with external magnetic fields. Here researchers study the influence of the spatial orientation of an ensemble of immobilized nanoparticles, with magnetic easy axes aligned parallel with respect to a dynamic external magnetic excitation field, on the magnetization response of the nanoparticles. The authors present a method and experimental proof of concept for estimating the spatial orientation of the easy axis from the magnetization response.

The operation of thermal diodes is typically limited to narrow temperature ranges and low rectification of steady-state heat currents. Despite their key application in thermal computing, and the analogy to their electronic counterparts, the development of thermal diodes operating with modulated heat currents has not received much attention. Based on the spatiotemporal modulation of a material’s thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity, the authors give proof of principle of a thermal diode that can rectify the modulated heat current of thermal waves. Rectification factors higher than 86% are obtained as the modulation frequencies driving the propagation of thermal waves decrease.
