In the quest to employ miniaturized atomic vapor cells for quantum applications, unfortunately such a short optical path is insufficient to obtain a decent signal that can be used to lock a laser. Heating up the cell would work, but at the price of undesired currents and linewidth broadening. Instead, the authors use light-induced atomic desorption (LIAD) to increase the atomic (and optical) density. Using LIAD yields a much larger contrast than does conventional spectroscopy—even at room temperature. Furthermore, eliminating the need for heating allow remote operation, without the need to provide electrical contacts to the device, which can be an important advantage in applications.

Hybrid semiconductor-superconductor systems are an appealing platform for both fundamental studies in condensed matter physics and quantum technologies. The authors demonstrate coherent operation of a hybrid superconducting qubit in magnetic fields as strong as 1 T, with the rich qubit spectrum revealing the underlying Josephson physics of these systems. The results open several avenues for research on e.g. robust Majorana transmon qubits, the probing of Andreev physics, and the coupling of superconducting qubits to spin qubits or spin ensembles.

Reliable readout is a crucial ingredient to successful operation of a spin-based quantum computer, but current approaches either utilize invasive device structures that hinder scale-up, or constrain qubit operation with specific tuning requirements. In this study, the authors realize digital spin readout via an in-line charge sensor housed in a cavity-coupled triple quantum dot. This system’s strong readout response combined with its retained device flexibility lends itself to future scaled architectures in multiqubit experiments.

Computers built of naturally probabilistic bits, as envisioned by Richard Feynman, share a large class of the applications anticipated for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. The authors show how the basic building block of a highly scaled memory technology, namely the familiar magnetic tunnel junction, can be straightforwardly modified by making use of two free layers that are each in the superparamagnetic regime, such that their natural fluctuations create highly efficient probabilistic bits at room temperature. The key insights obtained here may help to repurpose existing memory chips to build massively parallel probabilistic computers, with up to billions of p-bits.
