The American Physical Society (APS) is delighted to announce the appointment of Stephen Bartlett, Professor in the School of Physics at the University of Sydney, Australia, to the role of Lead Editor of PRX Quantum, APS’s new, highly selective, open access journal covering quantum information science and technology. Bartlett will serve as the inaugural Lead Editor of the journal, which will open for submissions later this month and waive article publication charge (APC) fees through the end of 2021.
Bartlett’s research pursuits are in the theory of quantum physics, with focus areas in quantum information theory, quantum computing, quantum measurement and control, quantum many-body systems, and the foundational issues of quantum mechanics. As a Chief Investigator in the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS), he leads a research program in Designer Quantum Materials. A long-standing goal of his research has been to identify the foundational aspects of quantum theory that can provide quantum advantage in the development of quantum computing and other quantum technologies.
As Lead Editor of PRX Quantum he will focus on positioning the new journal to serve the diverse, multidisciplinary quantum information science and technology research community spanning traditional disciplines including physics, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, materials, engineering, and technology.
“I’m very excited to be part of PRX Quantum,” said Dr. Bartlett. “With so many results coming out across a breadth of disciplines, it’s an amazing time to be a researcher in the rapidly growing and diverse community covering all things quantum. PRX Quantum will provide an outlet for high-quality, innovative research, and offer the Physical Review experience researchers trust. The “PRX” in the journal’s title signifies the very highest editorial standards with the visibility of open access. I look forward to PRX Quantum showcasing the very best of quantum information science and technology, and providing a welcoming home for the most exciting research from our multidisciplinary community.”
Bartlett completed his Ph.D. in mathematical physics at the University of Toronto before moving to Australia and focusing his research on the theory of quantum computing, first as a Macquarie University Research Fellow and then as an ARC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Queensland. Since 2005 he has led a research program in theoretical quantum physics at the University of Sydney. He is a member of APS and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics.
“For many years Professor Bartlett has contributed to our journals and the communities they serve,” said APS Editor in Chief, Dr. Michael Thoennessen. “He has authored papers in half of our 14 titles, which speaks to the breadth of his research and collaborations. He has also served as a referee for many of our titles, and as a member of the Editorial Board of Physical Review X … the original ‘PRX.’ And now we are thrilled to name him the founding Lead Editor of PRX Quantum.”
PRX Quantum will soon be announcing appointments of Editorial Board members as it continues to build a diverse and global team to cover the full breadth of quantum information science and technology research.
