Electron quasiparticles are progressively weakened by correlations upon approaching a continuos Mott metal-insulator transition in a bulk solid. We show that corresponding to the bulk weakening, a dead layer forms below the surface of the solid, where quasiparticles are exponentially suppressed. The surface dead layer depth is a bulk property and diverges when the Mott transition is approached. We describe this phenomenon in a Hubbard model within a self-consistent Gutzwiller approximation. The photoemission data of Rodolakis et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 066805 (2009)] in ${\mathrm{V}}_2{\mathrm{O}}_3$ appear to be in accord with this physical picture.

The electromotive force induced by a moving magnetic domain wall in a nanostrip has been calculated theoretically and detected experimentally. It is found that the emf depends only on the domain wall transformation frequency through a universal Josephson type relation, which is closely related to the topological nature of the domain wall. Our experimental measurements confirm the theoretical prediction.

The response of a neuron to synaptic input strongly depends on whether or not the neuron has just emitted a spike. We propose a neuron model that after spike emission exhibits a partial response to residual input charges and study its collective network dynamics analytically. We uncover a desynchronization mechanism that causes a sequential desynchronization transition: In globally coupled neurons an increase in the strength of the partial response induces a sequence of bifurcations from states with large clusters of synchronously firing neurons, through states with smaller clusters to completely asynchronous spiking. We briefly discuss key consequences of this mechanism for more general networks of biophysical neurons.

Understanding the role of coherent electronic motion is expected to resolve general questions of importance in macromolecular energy transfer. We demonstrate a novel nonlinear optical method, angle-resolved coherent wave mixing, that separates out coherently coupled electronic transitions and energy transfers in an instantaneous two-dimensional mapping. Angular resolution of the signal is achieved by using millimeter laser beam waists at the sample and by signal relay to the far field; for this we use a high energy, ultrabroadband hollow fiber laser source. We reveal quantum electronic beating with a time-ordered selection of transition energies in a photosynthetic complex.

The binodals and the nonergodicity lines of a binary mixture of hard-sphere-like particles with a large size ratio are computed for studying the interplay between dynamic arrest and phase separation in depletion-driven colloidal mixtures. Contrary to the case of hard core plus short-range effective attraction, physical gelation without competition with the fluid-phase separation can occur in such mixtures. This behavior due to the oscillations in the depletion potential should concern all simple mixtures with a nonideal depletant, justifying further studies of their dynamic properties.

Large interconnected gold wire structures ($\sim {\mathrm{cm}}^2$) of different topologies have been made by the drying of a gold nanoparticle suspension that has formed a connected network of liquid bridges in the interstices between a 2D crystalline layer of latex particles and a substrate. Slow evaporation of the suspending medium assembles the nanoparticles into a periodic or disordered conducting network of micrometer thick gold wires on the substrate. The presence of surfactants in the suspension is critical to maintaining the stability of the liquid bridge network during the evaporation process.

A new measurement of the cosmic-ray antiproton-to-proton flux ratio between 1 and 100 GeV is presented. The results were obtained with the PAMELA experiment, which was launched into low-Earth orbit on-board the Resurs-DK1 satellite on June 15th 2006. During 500 days of data collection a total of about 1000 antiprotons have been identified, including 100 above an energy of 20 GeV. The high-energy results are a tenfold improvement in statistics with respect to all previously published data. The data follow the trend expected from secondary production calculations and significantly constrain contributions from exotic sources, e.g., dark matter particle annihilations.

Micromotors pushed by biological entities, such as motile bacteria, constitute a fascinating way to convert chemical energy into mechanical work at the micrometer scale. Here we show, by using numerical simulations, that a properly designed asymmetric object can be spontaneously set into the desired motion when immersed in a chaotic bacterial bath. Our findings open the way to conceive new hybrid microdevices exploiting the mechanical power production of bacterial organisms. Moreover, the system provides an example of how, in contrast with equilibrium thermal baths, the irreversible chaotic motion of active particles can be rectified by asymmetric environments.

Gates acting on more than two qubits are appealing as they can substitute complex sequences of two-qubit gates, thus promising faster execution and higher fidelity. One important multiqubit operation is the quantum Toffoli gate that performs a controlled NOT operation on a target qubit depending on the state of two control qubits. Here we present the first experimental realization of the quantum Toffoli gate in an ion trap quantum computer, achieving a mean gate fidelity of 71(3)%. Our implementation is particularly efficient as the relevant logic information is directly encoded in the motion of the ion string.

When self-sputtering is driven far above the runaway threshold voltage, energetic electrons are made available to produce “excess plasma” far from the magnetron target. Ionization balance considerations show that the secondary electrons deliver the necessary energy to the “remote” zone. Thereby, such a system can be an extraordinarily prolific generator of usable metal ions. Contrary to other known sources, the ion current to a substrate can exceed the discharge current. For gasless self-sputtering of copper, the usable ion current scales exponentially with the discharge voltage.

We present a scheme for eliminating the optical diffraction of slow light in a thermal atomic medium of electromagnetically induced transparency. Nondiffraction is achieved for an arbitrary paraxial image by manipulating the susceptibility in momentum space, in contrast to the common approach, which employs guidance of specific modes by manipulating the susceptibility in real space. For negative two-photon detuning, the moving atoms drag the transverse momentum components unequally, resulting in a Doppler trapping of light by atoms in two dimensions.

According to recent experiments and predictions, the orientation of the polarization at the surface of a ferroelectric material can affect its surface chemistry. Here we demonstrate the converse effect: the chemical environment can control the polarization orientation in a ferroelectric film. In situ synchrotron x-ray scattering measurements show that high or low oxygen partial pressure induces outward or inward polarization, respectively, in an ultrathin ${\mathrm{PbTiO}}_3$ film. Ab initio calculations provide insight into surface structure changes observed during chemical switching.

A search for high-mass resonances in the $e^{+}{e}^{-}$ final state is presented based on $2.5{\mathrm{fb}}^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=1.96\mathrm{TeV}$ $p\overline{p}$ collision data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The largest excess over the standard model prediction is at an $e^{+}{e}^{-}$ invariant mass of $240\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$. The probability of observing such an excess arising from fluctuations in the standard model anywhere in the mass range of $150–1000\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$ is 0.6% (equivalent to $2.5\sigma$). We exclude the standard model coupling $Z^{\prime }$ and the Randall-Sundrum graviton for $k/{\overline{M}}_{\mathrm{Pl}}=0.1$ with masses below 963 and $848\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$ at the 95% credibility level, respectively.

A circular disc hitting a water surface creates an impact crater which after collapse leads to a vigorous jet. Upon impact an axisymmetric air cavity forms and eventually pinches off in a single point halfway down the cavity. Two fast sharp-pointed jets are observed shooting up- and downwards from the closure location, which by then has turned into a stagnation point surrounded by a locally hyperbolic flow pattern. This flow, however, is not the mechanism feeding the jets. Using high-speed imaging and numerical simulations we show that jetting is fed by the local flow around the base of the jet, which is forced by the colliding cavity walls. We show how the well-known theory of a collapsing void (using a line of sinks on the symmetry axis) can be continued beyond pinch-off to obtain a new and quantitative model for jet formation which agrees well with numerical and experimental data.

We report on spin injection experiments at a $\mathrm{Co}/{\mathrm{Al}}_2{\mathrm{O}}_3/\mathrm{GaAs}$ interface with electrical detection. The application of a transverse magnetic field induces a large voltage drop $\Delta V$ at the interface as high as 1.2 mV for a current density of $0.34\mathrm{nA}·\mu {\mathrm{m}}^{-2}$. This represents a dramatic increase of the spin accumulation signal, well above the theoretical predictions for spin injection through a ferromagnet/semiconductor interface. Such an enhancement is consistent with a sequential tunneling process via localized states located in the vicinity of the ${\mathrm{Al}}_2{\mathrm{O}}_3/\mathrm{GaAs}$ interface. For spin-polarized carriers these states act as an accumulation layer where the spin lifetime is large. A model taking into account the spin lifetime and the escape tunneling time for carriers traveling back into the ferromagnetic contact reproduces accurately the experimental results.

We report measurements of the nonequilibrium electron energy distribution in carbon nanotubes. Using tunneling spectroscopy via a superconducting probe, we study the shape of the local electron distribution functions, and hence energy relaxation rates, in nanotubes that have bias voltages applied between their ends. At low temperatures, electrons interact weakly in nanotubes of a few microns channel length, independent of end-to-end-conductance values. Surprisingly, the energy relaxation rate can increase substantially when the temperature is raised to only 1.5 K.

We propose a new class of nanoscale electro-optical traps for neutral atoms. A prototype is the toroidal trap created by a suspended, charged carbon nanotube decorated with a silver nanosphere dimer. An illuminating laser field, blue detuned from an atomic resonance frequency, is strongly focused by plasmons induced in the dimer and generates both a repulsive potential barrier near the nanostructure surface and a large viscous damping force that facilitates trap loading. Atoms with velocities of several meters per second may be loaded directly into the trap via spontaneous emission of just two photons.

We discuss the density fluctuations of a fluid due to zero point motion, assuming a linear dispersion relation. We argue that density fluctuations in a fluid can be a useful analog model for better understanding fluctuations in relativistic quantum field theory. We calculate the differential cross section for light scattering by the zero point density fluctuations, and find a result proportional to the fifth power of the light frequency. We give some estimates of the relative magnitude of this effect compared to the scattering by thermal density fluctuations, and find that it can be of the order 13% for liquid neon at optical frequencies. This relative magnitude is proportional to frequency and inversely proportional to temperature. Although the scattering by zero point density fluctuation is small, it may be observable.

We study the effect of the QCD critical point on non-Gaussian moments (cumulants) of fluctuations of experimental observables in heavy-ion collisions. We find that these moments are very sensitive to the proximity of the critical point, as measured by the magnitude of the correlation length $\xi$. For example, the cubic central moment of multiplicity $⟨(\delta N{)}^3⟩\sim {\xi }^{4.5}$ and the quartic cumulant $⟨(\delta N{)}^4{⟩}_c\sim {\xi }^7$. We estimate the magnitude of critical point contributions to non-Gaussian fluctuations of pion and proton multiplicities.

The enhanced spin Hall effect in Au metal due to the resonant skew scattering is studied with first-principles band structure calculations. Especially the gigantic spin Hall angle ${\gamma }_S\cong 0.1$ observed recently [T. Seki et al., Nature Mater. 7, 125 (2008)] is attributed to the orbital-dependent Kondo effect of Fe in the Au host metal, where the $t_{2g}$ orbitals are in the mixed-valence region while $e_g$ orbitals are in the Kondo limit. The enhanced spin-orbit interaction by the electron correlation in the $t_{2g}$ orbitals leads to the gigantic spin Hall effect. Impurities with $5d$ orbitals are also discussed.
