John Kim and Gary Leal Selected as Co-Lead Editors of Physical Review Fluids

The American Physical Society (APS) announces the reappointment of John Kim, University of California, Los Angeles, and Gary Leal, University of California, Santa Barbara, as co-lead editors of Physical Review Fluids (PRFluids). Since its launch in 2016, John and Gary have worked closely with a distinguished and diverse editorial board to publish innovative research that significantly advances the fundamental understanding of fluid dynamics.

“John and Gary have been instrumental in establishing PRFluids as a premier journal in the field of fluid dynamics,” said Michael Thoennessen, APS editor in chief. “I fully agree with the recommendation of the search committee and look forward to John and Gary’s continued leadership.”

“We are delighted to be re-appointed as co-lead editors of PRFluids. Since its launch, the journal has made great strides towards becoming an integral member of the Physical Review family. We are thankful for the outstanding support from the research community and collective experience of the PRFluids editorial team,” said John Kim and Gary Leal. “We are excited to continue developing the scope of PRFluids to include emerging areas of fluid dynamics research and working with the growing research community to position it as the leading fluid dynamics research journal.

John Kim received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and then worked as a postdoctoral fellow, research scientist, and branch chief at NASA Ames Research Center. He joined UCLA in 1993 as Rockwell Collins Professor. He is a Fellow of the APS and of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He received the Otto Laporte Award from the APS in 2001.

Gary Leal received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Stanford University and did postdoctoral work at DAMTP, Cambridge University. He is currently the Schlinger Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering, and Research Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is an APS Fellow and a member of NAE and the American Academy for Arts and Sciences. He received the Fluid Dynamics Prize of the APS in 2002. His research concentrates on viscous flow phenomena and complex fluids.

“Since its launch nearly two years ago, John and Gary have quickly established PRFluids as one of the top journals in fluid dynamics,” said Matthew Salter, APS publisher. “I am delighted with the outstanding contribution the journal has already made to the Physical Review portfolio and look forward to seeing its continued growth and success.”
