Abstract
We experimentally reveal that a sub-millimetric liquid jet can impact a heated substrate without making any contact with the underlying solid. These Leidenfrost jets are surfing on their own vapor layer and are observed under certain conditions related to jet radius, fluid velocity, incident angle and substrate temperature. We focus on the thickness of the vapor layer and on its typical area over which the jet bounces on the substrate. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with models. We also observe a directed percolationlike transition appearing when the jet enters in contact boiling with the heated substrate.
