Thirty-Year Retrospective Collection Marks Transition of GSNP to DSNP

A new retrospective collection celebrates the promotion of the American Physical Society’s (APS) Topical Group on Statistical and Nonlinear Physics (GSNP) to Division status (DSNP). Jointly curated by Physical Review E (PRE) editors and DSNP leadership, the collection features influential PRE articles that have helped define these fields over the 30 years since the journal’s debut.

From their inception in 1993 and 1997 respectively, PRE and DSNP have shared a common guiding principle: to serve as a leading resource for statistical and nonlinear physics across a broad community of physicists and other physical scientists. In the recent editorial, “Statistical and Nonlinear Physics Crosses a Threshold,” the authors cite interdisciplinarity, the field’s dynamism, and its societal and human impact as key characteristics that distinguish the Division and shape its relationship with PRE. To further strengthen the synergies between the two groups, PRE is now sponsoring a Dissertation Award in Statistical and Nonlinear Physics.

A steady growth in membership sparked the transformation from GSNP to DSNP; Divisions are the largest units that represent subfields in APS. Statistical and nonlinear physics enthusiasts can look forward to increased opportunities for scientific sessions at APS meetings, broader participation, and better representation within APS governance.
