2026 Irwin Oppenheim Award

APS congratulates José Polo-Gómez, Abhijeet Melkani, and Jayson Paulose as the recipients of the 2026 Irwin Oppenheim Award for best paper by early career scientists published in Physical Review E. The paper by Polo-Gómez was selected for its strong relevance to quantum information and its exceptional clarity in showing that the second law of thermodynamics limits the ability to distinguish between quantum states. The paper by Melkani and Paulose was selected for its surprising yet fundamental insights in the use of symmetries to determine parametric resonance conditions for coupled oscillators.
