Abstract
Dielectric relaxation times of powdered amorphous ices have served as kinetic benchmarks for the glass dynamics of water. To examine the effect of sample geometry on the dielectric spectra, we measured in situ dielectric spectra of bulk and emulsified high- and low-density amorphous ices at . The emulsified samples showed loss maxima in the measurement window, while the bulk samples showed none. This is consistent with the qualitative peak-shift trends calculated using series-capacitor and Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars approximations for ice and oil. Caution is needed when using the dielectric results obtained from emulsionlike samples (e.g., powder) as kinetic benchmarks.
