Gravitational waves in cold dark matter

Raphael Flauger and Steven Weinberg

Phys. Rev. D 97, 123506 (2018) - Published 7 June, 2018

Calculations show that dark matter affects the propagation of gravitational waves but at a level far below the sensitivity of current detectors.

Model independent inference of the expansion history and implications for the growth of structure

Shahab Joudaki, Manoj Kaplinghat, Ryan Keeley, and David Kirkby

Phys. Rev. D 97, 123501 (2018) - Published 4 June, 2018

A “crisis in cosmology” is lurking in recent measurements of the Hubble constant H0 (the current expansion rate of the Universe), caused by a tension between direct observations through distance measurements and an inferred value, computed with the standard model of cosmology (ΛCDM) from CMB data. The latter involves an approx. 13 billion years time evolution. The authors use statistical methods to analyze different available data sets from different kind of observations that carry information about different moments from the evolution of the Universe, to determine H0 in a model independent way, making only minimal basic assumptions, and find that the tension with direct observation of H0 persists.

Global simulations of strongly magnetized remnant massive neutron stars formed in binary neutron star mergers

Kenta Kiuchi, Koutarou Kyutoku, Yuichiro Sekiguchi, and Masaru Shibata

Phys. Rev. D 97, 124039 (2018) - Published 15 June, 2018

This article reports on the results of novel, extremely high-resolution simulations of the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) of neutron star mergers, focussing on angular momentum transport due to the MHD turbulence. The authors show that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at merger amplifies the magnetic energy to ∼1% of the thermal energy.

Foundations of the self-force problem in arbitrary dimensions

Abraham I. Harte, Peter Taylor, and Éanna É. Flanagan

Phys. Rev. D 97, 124053 (2018) - Published 21 June, 2018

This paper provides a concrete means of calculating self-forces on bodies in an odd number of dimensions, the technique being anchored to an axiomatic basis, which provides a unifying framework for even and odd dimensions. It also provides a number of explicit self-force expressions in Minkowski space-time and is arguably a significant contribution to the field.
