Controlling the spatial degrees of freedom of light by its polarization is at the heart of countless phenomena and applications. The most prominent example is the generation of orbital angular momentum by circularly polarized light. Here, the authors demonstrate the opposite effect – mastering spin by orbital angular momentum. They employ a nanoscopic scatterer to manipulate the input field locally at the nanoscale and generate purely circularly polarized light with the spin depending on the orbital angular momentum that they started with.

Phase transitions at a finite (i.e. nonzero) are typically driven by classical fluctuations, as opposed to those at zero temperature where quantum mechanics plays an essential role. Motivated by this observation, here we ask whether there exist any universal signatures of quantum correlations across a finite temperature phase transition? In this work, we approach this question by investigating one measure of quantum correlations at finite temperature, called ‘entanglement negativity’, in several models that exhibit phase transition.

Phys. Rev. B 99, 054516 (2019) - Published 25 February, 2019

Recent experiments have revealed remarkable new features of the optimal doping state of cuprate superconductors, namely, a peak in the specific heat for the hole-doped case and a state with Fermi pockets but only fluctuating antiferromagnetic order for the electron-doped case. The authors propose a unified SU(2) gauge theory with a Higgs field and demonstrate how it can explain these disparate phenomena by way of topological phase transitions and crossovers.
