Phys. Rev. B 100, 125301 (2019) - Published 3 September, 2019

Symmetry is a powerful tool for understanding the dynamics of Bloch electrons in a crystal. Here, the authors develop a general theory to characterize the symmetry of Bloch electrons in a tight-binding description, focusing in particular on the possibility that the symmetry labels called irreducible representations are not always unique, although this does not affect observable physics. The theory is used to construct a generic effective Hamiltonian for electrons in monolayer MoS2, which incorporates spin-orbit coupling, strain, and external electric and magnetic fields.
