The authors couple a microwave cavity to a voltage-biased Cooper-pair transistor, which emits photons at the Josephson frequency . If that frequency matches the cavity frequency, photons build up in it, which in turn creates back-action on the Cooper-pair transistor leading to stimulated rather than spontaneous tunneling.

MnWO is a multiferroic material with spontaneous electric polarization induced by spiral magnetic order. One of its puzzling properties is the so called “X phase” that appears at applied magnetic fields above 10 Tesla and in a narrow temperature range at about 10 Kelvin. The phase transition from the low-field incommensurate magnetic cycloid phase into the X phase is characterized by a switch of the direction in the polarization. In this article a collaboration of authors from Spain, France, and Russia study the X-phase using neutron diffraction and determine its magnetic structure and the nature of the unusual polarization flop.

The hallmark of the toroidal order in solids is the presence of the cross-coupling term in the free energy of the system that leads to antisymmetric magneto-electric effect. In the last several years toroidal order has attracted interest in connection with multiferroic insulating materials. The authors of this manuscript show that such an exotic order can occur even in metallic systems on lattice structures where the spatial-inversion symmetry is preserved globally but broken intrinsically at each magnetic site. They suggest a uranium compound UNiB as a candidate material where such a state can be realized.
