Microwave circulators are usually treated as auxiliary, classical components in superconducting quantum computing. This study integrates the cavity-magnon polariton modes of a custom-built circulator with superconducting microwave cavities to implement a tunable nonreciprocal interaction. The apparatus is well described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, yielding a theoretical framework to model other nonreciprocally coupled circuit elements on the same platform in the future. The experiment also showcases an experimental probe of the left and right eigenvectors associated with the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian.

Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems hold promise for recycling heat into electricity, but a key challenge is to lower the operating temperature to the range of industrial waste heat, at high efficiency. The authors offer a thermodynamic analysis of the open-circuit voltage of TPV systems operating in the far and near fields, and compare to solar PVs. An analytic model shows that although nonradiative losses increase in the near field, luminescence efficiency improves significantly in this range. This work suggests that an ultrathin near-field TPV system can exhibit ultrahigh open circuit voltage and high efficiency, for emitter temperatures much lower than its far-field counterpart.

A significant challenge in the design of large-scale quantum processors is the presence of unwanted qubit-qubit crosstalk, which leads to uncontrollable accumulation of correlated errors. This work introduces a superconducting device that can controllably turn qubit-qubit interactions on and off. The design takes hints from noise-protected bosonic qubits to obtain exponential suppression of crosstalk in the off state. These results offer the possibility to keep crosstalk under control in large superconducting processors. Notably, this approach complements the recently introduced protected qubits; an architecture based on them and the proposed coupler would have built-in protection.
