Magnons (magnetic quasiparticles) coupled to photons are referred to as magnon polaritons (MPs). Ultrastrongly coupled and directionally nonreciprocal MPs at room temperature would be important for spintronic hybrid quantum systems, but that combination of properties has not yet been observed. This study uses metamaterials without time-reversal or space-inversion symmetries to make progress on the problem, and its results will impact the engineering of synthetic gauge fields, as well as quasiparticle “chemistry” and hybrid quantum systems.

Single-photon detectors are integral to many photonic quantum technologies, but take tens of nanoseconds to recover after each detection event. This study models the form of the count-rate saturation for bunched, Poissonian, and antibunched light sources and demonstrates the form’s effect on the recovery of detector efficiency. The authors also show how this effect suppresses the ability to accurately measure multiphoton correlation with bunched light. These insights highlight the importance of accurate detector calibration as higher-rate sources continue to be developed for real-world quantum technologies.

In optics, nonlinear frequency conversion is of great importance for all-optical signal processing, quantum communication, biomedicine, data storage, environmental monitoring, and more. For efficient nonlinear optical processes, the phase-matching condition must be strictly satisfied, but typically this applies only for one specific arrangement of beams (typically copropagating), and only in a narrow wavelength range. The authors use a submillimeter metal-cladding waveguide (SMCW) to achieve phase-matching-free second-harmonic generation and nonlinear frequency conversion over a wide range of pump wavelengths (visible to infrared), with experiments matching theory nicely.
