Alessandra Colla and Heinz-Peter Breuer

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052408 (2021) - Published 10 November, 2021

The authors add a driving force to a quantum dissipative model and investigate its effect on entropy production and correlations. Notably, it renders two common definitions of entropy production incompatible in the weak-coupling limit.

Evaluating the advantage of adaptive strategies for quantum channel distinguishability

Vishal Katariya and Mark M. Wilde

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052406 (2021) - Published 8 November, 2021

Quantum strategies are a generalization of quantum channels, allowing for multiple interactions over multiple rounds. Here, the authors expand the resource theory of asymmetric distinguishability to quantum strategies. They find that adaptive, sequential strategies may offer an advantage over parallel ones in the discrimination of amplitude damping channels.

K. Eickhoff, L. Feld, D. Köhnke, T. Bayer, and M. Wollenhaupt

Phys. Rev. A 104, 052805 (2021) - Published 5 November, 2021

Phases play an important role in ultrafast dynamics. In this paper, the authors present an ultrafast quantum state holography scheme based on the interference of photoelectron wave packets from multiphoton ionization using shaper-generated trichromatic pump-probe-reference pulse sequences. Independent control of the phase, the time delay, and the central wavelength of all three sub-pulses are demonstrated in a proof-of-concept experiment on the multiphoton ionization of potassium atoms.

A. J. Rasmusson, Marissa D'Onofrio, Yuanheng Xie, Jiafeng Cui, and Philip Richerme

Phys. Rev. A 104, 043108 (2021) - Published 21 October, 2021

Resolved-sideband cooling is a workhorse technique for a wide range of experiments with trapped ions, atoms, or micromechanical oscillators in the quantum regime. In this work, the authors provide both a novel approach to effectively optimize the cooling sequences using graph theory, as well as a technique to measure the ion temperature more accurately. The procedure should be applicable to any trapped-ion experiment.

Eduardo Ibarra-García-Padilla, Sohail Dasgupta, Hao-Tian Wei, Shintaro Taie, Yoshiro Takahashi, Richard T. Scalettar, and Kaden R. A. Hazzard

Phys. Rev. A 104, 043316 (2021) - Published 21 October, 2021

The authors study thermodynamic properties of the SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard model in 2D square lattices and discover simple scaling laws of the energy, the number of on-site pairs, and the kinetic energy with respect to N when the temperature is above the superexchange energy. The results establish a limit to the cooling for SU(N) fermions in 2D, in contrast to the arbitrarily low temperatures that could potentially be achieved in 1D.

Toward witnessing molecular exciton entanglement from spectroscopy

Andrew E. Sifain, Francesca Fassioli, and Gregory D. Scholes

Phys. Rev. A 104, 042416 (2021) - Published 20 October, 2021

Entanglement is both fragile and challenging to quantify experimentally, since the state density matrix is not readily available. Here, the authors propose an experimental measure of multipartite entanglement of excitons in some chemical systems using nonlinear optical spectroscopy.

Characterization of the 3dδ Rydberg state of MgAr+ using a quantum-control optical scheme

M. Génévriez, D. Wehrli, T. Berglitsch, and F. Merkt

Phys. Rev. A 104, 042811 (2021) - Published 18 October, 2021

The authors developed a highly sensitive method based on a quantum-control double-resonance-spectroscopy scheme to study electronically excited states of molecular ions that do not dissociate. The method is used to study the 3dδ Rydberg state of MgAr+, and the results contribute to the first extensive characterization of the Rydberg states of a molecular cation.

Detecting two photons with one molecule

Saumya Biswas and S. J. van Enk

Phys. Rev. A 104, 043703 (2021) - Published 11 October, 2021

Taking inspiration from the human eye, the authors propose using a five-level molecule to detect up to two photons of different frequency that arrive sequentially. They use two formalisms to develop this model: a density-matrix method to achieve analytical results and characterize the proposed detector, and a Hamiltonian method that they show is well suited for numerical calculations.

Paul Kairys and Travis S. Humble

Phys. Rev. A 104, 042602 (2021) - Published 8 October, 2021

Building on known quantum control methods, the authors propose a technique to scalably use optimal control to simulate quantum dynamics. They validate this approach with numerical simulation of a system of superconducting transmons.

Fault-tolerant quantum error correction using error weight parities

Theerapat Tansuwannont and Debbie Leung

Phys. Rev. A 104, 042410 (2021) - Published 7 October, 2021

Current fault-tolerant quantum computation protocols require the preparation of a large number of auxiliary qubits. In contrast, the “weight parity error correction” introduced here is a remarkably qubit-efficient technique for correcting even high-weight errors in some stabilizer codes, provided that the weight parity is known.

Masoud Gharahi and Stefano Mancini

Phys. Rev. A 104, 042402 (2021) - Published 4 October, 2021

On the basis of an algebraic-geometric approach, the authors provide a rigorous characterization of pure states of three-qudit systems in terms of a finite number of families and subfamilies. The characterization has operational relevance for quantifying entanglement as a resource.

Xianwu Jiang, Josh Forer, Chi Hong Yuen, Mehdi Ayouz, and Viatcheslav Kokoouline

Phys. Rev. A 104, 042801 (2021) - Published 4 October, 2021

The authors present a computational analysis of dissociative recombination of CH+, in which both direct and indirect mechanisms are included. Good agreement with experiments is found in a wide regime while an explanation for disagreement was provided at lower energies. The theoretical method used in this study could be applicable in a wide range of diatomic cations.

Deeksha Kanti, J. Z. Kamiński, Liang-You Peng, and K. Krajewska

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033112 (2021) - Published 20 September, 2021

The authors develop a theoretical treatment of laser-assisted electron-atom radiative recombination in the presence of short laser pulses, which incorporates contributions from the laser-field-free process along with the laser-field-modified process. The theory is then illustrated with numerical examples involving either isolated pulses or pulse trains.

Mike Reppert and Deborah Reppert

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033519 (2021) - Published 20 September, 2021

The authors develop a diagrammatic theory for the classical description of nonlinear response functions of anharmonic oscillators. Based on the theory, the authors demonstrate that the third-order response of a weakly anharmonic system can be qualitatively described using classical dynamics, clarifying the boundary of classical and purely quantum phenomena in relation to observations of molecular coherence.

Toshiaki Ando, Alex Liu, Naoki Negishi, Atsushi Iwasaki, and Kaoru Yamanouchi

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033516 (2021) - Published 15 September, 2021

The authors determine the spin-orbit-splitting energies in the electronic ground states of Ar+, Kr+, and Kr2+ from the temporal evolution of wave packets generated by strong-field ionization of the neutral atoms and the singly charged ion, respectively. The results are in agreement with earlier measurements with significantly improved precision.

Isabelle Bouchoule, Léa Dubois, and Léo-Paul Barbier

Phys. Rev. A 104, L031304 (2021) - Published 15 September, 2021

The authors investigate the effect of losses on an interacting quantum gas and identify a divergence of the energy increase rate. The authors explain several mechanisms that could lead to a regularization of the divergence and point out that a standard Lindblad master equation leads to incorrect divergences in the time evolution of the energy of the gas.

Joshua J. Guanzon, Austin P. Lund, and Timothy C. Ralph

Phys. Rev. A 104, 032607 (2021) - Published 13 September, 2021

The authors study the application of scattershot single-photon sources to multimode quantum metrology by investigating three different kinds of interferometers. They show that all three of them give the same average amount of information, but two of the three need to be in specific input configurations while the third one always beats the classical limit regardless of the input configuration.

Marian Kreyer, Jeong Ho Han, Cornelis Ravensbergen, Vincent Corre, Elisa Soave, Emil Kirilov, and Rudolf Grimm

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033106 (2021) - Published 10 September, 2021

The authors introduce a scheme to measure the dynamical polarizability of trapped ultracold atoms on both sides of a resonance through modulation spectroscopy in an optical lattice. The authors then demonstrate the scheme by measuring the scalar and the tensorial part of the anisotropic polarizability of Dy atoms near the 626-nm intercombination line using K as a reference species.
