Abstract
Mechanisms that give rise to coherent quantum dynamics, such as quantum many-body scars, have recently attracted much interest as a way of controlling quantum chaos. However, identifying the presence of quantum scars in general many-body Hamiltonians remains an outstanding challenge. Here we introduce ScarFinder, a variational framework that reveals possible scar-like dynamics without prior knowledge of scar states or their algebraic structure, assuming only that such dynamics remain low in entanglement. By iteratively evolving and projecting states within a variational manifold, ScarFinder isolates scarred trajectories by suppressing thermal contributions. We validate the method on the analytically tractable spin-1 model, recovering the known scar dynamics, as well as the mixed-field Ising model, where we capture and generalize the initial conditions previously associated with “weak thermalization.” We then apply the method to the PXP model of Rydberg atom arrays, finding a previously unknown trajectory with nearly-perfect revival dynamics in the thermodynamic limit. We also demonstrate that ScarFinder can efficiently identify the centers of stable islands in Poincaré sections of the mixed phase space that results from the projection of many-body quantum dynamics to a variational manifold. Our results establish ScarFinder as a powerful, model-agnostic tool for identifying and optimizing coherent dynamics in quantum many-body systems.

Popular Summary
A central challenge in quantum science is how to generate and preserve stable quantum behavior in systems that are naturally unstable and tend to thermalize. In everyday terms, interacting quantum systems quickly lose their coherence, relaxing into a featureless state—analogous to cream stirred into coffee becoming uniform. Yet, for applications in quantum technology (including computing, simulation, and sensing), sustaining long-lived, nonthermal behavior is essential. This raises a fundamental question: Can hidden structures within complex quantum dynamics protect coherence far from equilibrium?
In this work, we introduce ScarFinder, a general method designed to uncover these hidden structures, known as quantum many-body scars. Quantum scars are rare dynamical pathways where coherence persists unexpectedly long, even in highly chaotic environments. Our approach combines quantum simulation with classical optimization to automatically search for and stabilize these special states. Applying ScarFinder to programmable arrays of Rydberg atoms, we demonstrate the discovery of new, robust, and tunable families of scar states. Importantly, the method is broadly applicable because it requires no prior knowledge of the system’s microscopic details.
This framework opens a new direction for controlling quantum chaos and engineering stable states of matter. Beyond its immediate application in neutral-atom experiments, ScarFinder offers a powerful design tool for future quantum devices, providing a pathway toward more reliable platforms for quantum computation and simulation.
