Abstract

As the inertial confinement fusion community looks at the next generation of public and private facilities a predictive cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) model valid for narrow- or broad-bandwidth lasers is vital to predicting energy coupling and implosion shape. CBET between a narrowband pump'' beam and broadbandprobe’’ beam imprints the spectrum of ion-acoustic wave resonances onto the transmitted probe, enabling single shot measurements of the CBET amplification curve and therefore CBET model testing. Three common models of the CBET interaction were tested against the experimental data, using a 3-D ray trace and plasma conditions that were independently measured by Thomson scattering. Predictive agreement with the measured amplification was found only when using a self-consistent set of assumptions for both the Thomson-scattering analysis and the CBET modeling, including the linear-kinetic (as opposed to average-ion fluid) treatment as well as accounting for non-Maxwellian electron distribution functions. Modeling also showed that the interaction was not modified by the incoherent bandwidth confirming the approach of modeling bandwidth as discrete lines in the CBET interaction is valid for laser-plasma-instability mitigation studies.
