Does Hot QCD Have a Conformal Manifold in the Chiral Limit?

Abstract
Recent lattice evidence may suggest the chiral phase transition in QCD is second order for massless flavors. We constrain conformal field theory (CFT) descriptions of a critical line in temperature and imaginary baryon chemical potential . An ’t Hooft anomaly at general constrains the transition even at , leaving only three minimal scenarios. The best-motivated scenario for , and perhaps also , is beyond Ginzburg-Landau, featuring a conformal manifold of -dependent universality classes with an exactly marginal operator related to baryon density.

If a CFT matching the symmetry and anomaly existed, a second-order transition at without symmetry breaking could occur at lower in the high- phase [27, 28, 29, 71]; see Supplemental Material [76] [Sec. S2] for comments.
Such a window is not supported by current lattice evidence with flavors of massive quarks in QCD; see Fig. 9 of Ref. [79] and Fig. 1 of Ref. [80].

It is natural to expect that a conformal manifold is always generated by a marginal operator. See, e.g., Ref. [82] for recent progress toward a proof of this relation.

For , we should allow chiral-symmetric -neutral -charged deformations, such as . However, operators in this sector are expected to be irrelevant.
One may speculate that the model (16) flows to a fixed point with emergent symmetry, with the term irrelevant [3, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91]. However, as discussed in Supplemental Material [76] [Sec. S3], no convincing evidence supports this possibility in the model (16).
