Scanning gate experiments: From strongly to weakly invasive probes

R. Steinacher, C. Pöltl, T. Krähenmann, A. Hofmann, C. Reichl, W. Zwerger, W. Wegscheider, R. A. Jalabert, K. Ensslin, D. Weinmann, and T. Ihn

Phys. Rev. B 98, 075426 (2018) - Published 24 August, 2018

One of the fundamental aims of scanning gate microscopy is to measure local properties of high-mobility two-dimensional electronic systems. Here, the authors present a study which sheds light on the invasiveness of the scanning probe. The two-dimensional system is shaped into a ballistic cavity, which progressively concentrates the local density of states in order to study the transition from weakly to strongly invasive measurements. A good agreement between experiment and theory allows for the identification of the imaging mechanisms according to the strength of the tip potential. The insights gained lead to a deeper understanding of weakly invasive scanning gate imaging.

Scaling laws of the Kondo problem at finite frequency

L. E. Bruhat, J. J. Viennot, M. C. Dartiailh, M. M. Desjardins, A. Cottet, and T. Kontos

Phys. Rev. B 98, 075121 (2018) - Published 9 August, 2018

Understanding the physics of interacting electrons is crucial for modern condensed matter. Quantum dot circuits – nanoscale circuits with nodes that can involve as little as one mobile electron - are established as powerful platforms to tackle such problems and, in particular, the Kondo problem, which is at the core of many correlated electron fluids. Such devices have been used extensively in the thermodynamic limit through low-frequency transport measurements. In this work, the authors perform a high-frequency study of the dynamics of the Kondo effect and its related scaling laws, going beyond what has been done previously.

Noncommutativity between the low-energy limit and integer dimension limits in the ε expansion: A case study of the antiferromagnetic quantum critical metal

Andrés Schlief, Peter Lunts, and Sung-Sik Lee

Phys. Rev. B 98, 075140 (2018) - Published 23 August, 2018

In this work, the quantum field theory that describes non-Fermi liquids realized at antiferromagnetic quantum critical points in space dimensions between two and three has been solved nonperturbatively. Using the solvable theory as a model system, the dimensional regularization scheme is put to the test. While the perturbative solution proves to be useful in constructing the nonperturbative solution, it reveals one subtlety: the low-energy limit and the integer dimension limits do not commute due to crossover energy scales that vanish at the physical dimensions.

Current-density implementation for calculating flexoelectric coefficients

Cyrus E. Dreyer, Massimiliano Stengel, and David Vanderbilt

Phys. Rev. B 98, 075153 (2018) - Published 28 August, 2018

Flexoelectricity, where a voltage is induced in an insulator by a strain gradient, becomes increasingly important as electronic devices shrink to the nanoscale. In order to develop a quantitative understanding of the flexoelectric effect in materials, the authors have developed and implemented a first-principles methodology based on density functional perturbation theory to calculate the flexoelectric response. The strategy of mapping a strain gradient onto a long-wavelength acoustic phonon, and calculating the electrical response via the current density, allows the full flexoelectric tensor to be determined with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency. This paves the way for an improved understanding of the underlying mechanisms responsible for flexoelectric effects, thus promising improved control of these effects in the context of nanoelectronic devices.

Phases of a phenomenological model of twisted bilayer graphene

J. F. Dodaro, S. A. Kivelson, Y. Schattner, X. Q. Sun, and C. Wang

Phys. Rev. B 98, 075154 (2018) - Published 28 August, 2018

Recent measurements in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene find a correlated insulator flanked by superconducting domes upon tuning the gate voltage. These results have prompted an analogy with the high-Tc cuprates and the physics of doped Mott insulators. Here, the authors instead propose an analogy with alkali-doped C60 and a violation of Hund’s first rule, whereby the resultant attractive interactions, as opposed to a large repulsive Hubbard U, are responsible for superconductivity. A two-band phenomenological model for twisted bilayer graphene is studied, which includes nematic orbital ferromagnet and orbital-triplet spin-singlet superconducting broken-symmetry phases.

Spatial extent of the excited exciton states in WS2 monolayers from diamagnetic shifts

Jonas Zipfel, Johannes Holler, Anatolie A. Mitioglu, Mariana V. Ballottin, Philipp Nagler, Andreas V. Stier, Takashi Taniguchi, Kenji Watanabe, Scott A. Crooker, Peter C. M. Christianen, Tobias Korn, and Alexey Chernikov

Phys. Rev. B 98, 075438 (2018) - Published 31 August, 2018

Excitons in van der Waals monolayer materials have attracted broad interest due to their high binding energies, strong light-matter interaction, and intriguing spin-valley physics, motivating the question of their appropriate description. Using magneto-optical spectroscopy, the authors explore the spatial extent of the excitons in WS2 monolayers, focusing on the properties of the excited states, including valley Zeeman and diamagnetic effects. The results further confirm the Wannier-Mott nature of the excitons in semiconducting monolayer materials and the assignment of the optical resonances. They provide additional support for the applicability of the effective mass models, based on the thin-film Coulomb potential.
