Quantum walks of correlated photons in non-Hermitian photonic lattices

Mingyuan Gao, Chong Sheng, Yule Zhao, Runqiu He, Liangliang Lu, Wei Chen, Kun Ding, Shining Zhu, and Hui Liu

Phys. Rev. B 110, 094308 (2024) - Published 9 September, 2024

Quantum walks have demonstrated capabilities that surpass classical approaches across a range of applications, including quantum computing, quantum simulation, quantum information processing, etc. Recently, quantum walks in non-Hermitian systems have garnered significant attention. The authors experimentally realize here a non-Hermitian photonic lattice on a silicon chip, observing asymmetric quantum walks of single photons induced by the non-Hermitian skin effect. Notably, they investigate the entanglement dynamics of correlated photons, revealing a suppression of entanglement in these non-Hermitian systems.

Giant effective magnetic moments of chiral phonons from orbit-lattice coupling

Swati Chaudhary, Dominik M. Juraschek, Martin Rodriguez-Vega, and Gregory A. Fiete

Phys. Rev. B 110, 094401 (2024) - Published 3 September, 2024

Circularly polarized lattice vibrations, also known as chiral phonons, carry angular momentum that leads to magnetic response. Recent experiments revealed responses far exceeding prior theoretical predictions within a classical framework. Here, the authors introduce a microscopic model which explains the large magnetic moments of chiral phonons in magnetic materials, resulting from orbit-lattice couplings that hybridize optical phonons with orbital electronic transitions.

Magnon-phonon interactions in the spinel compound MnSc2Se4

Phys. Rev. B 110, 094414 (2024) - Published 9 September, 2024

Magnetic frustration frequently leads to highly correlated spin fluctuations and novel ordered states. MnSc2X4 (X=S, Se) compounds are strongly frustrated magnets because of their diamond magnetic sublattice and the presence of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. From the ultrasound results for the longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes and a microscopic model based on linear spin-wave theory, the authors use here the magnon-phonon interactions to explore the quantum-spin fluctuations induced by the magnetic field in the frustrated magnet MnSc2Se4.

Orbital Kerr effect and terahertz detection via the nonlinear Hall effect

Diego García Ovalle, Armando Pezo, and Aurélien Manchon

Phys. Rev. B 110, 094439 (2024) - Published 26 September, 2024

The optical Kerr effect, widely used for probing magnetic domains, can be used to detect nonequilibrium orbital accumulation, even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. In certain low-symmetry crystals, this orbital accumulation is associated with a nonlinear Hall effect that can be exploited for terahertz (THz) detection. As a result, the “orbital” Kerr effect is directly related to the THz responsivity of the material. Using first-principles calculations, the authors demonstrate here that this effect in low-symmetry crystals and multilayers can be remarkably large.

Nonlocal electrodynamics and the penetration depth of superconducting Sr2RuO4

Henrik S. Røising, Andreas Kreisel, and Brian M. Andersen

Phys. Rev. B 110, 094511 (2024) - Published 17 September, 2024

The low-temperature behavior of the penetration depth of a superconductor can be used to infer properties of low-energy quasiparticles. Due to the large size of the Cooper pair at the nodal region, nonlocal corrections need to be taken into account even in type-II superconductors. The authors calculate the penetration depth for a multiband superconductor with multiple nodes and compare it to penetration-depth measurements on Sr2RuO4 to evaluate what can be learned about the superconducting state in this material.

Principles of two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy of collective excitations: The case of Josephson plasmons in layered superconductors

Alex Gómez Salvador, Pavel E. Dolgirev, Marios H. Michael, Albert Liu, Danica Pavicevic, Michael Fechner, Andrea Cavalleri, and Eugene Demler

Phys. Rev. B 110, 094514 (2024) - Published 20 September, 2024

This paper presents a theoretical framework for two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS) of collective excitations in condensed matter systems. Focusing on the Josephson plasma resonance in layered superconductors as a model collective excitation, the authors show how 2DTS reveals physics beyond what is accessible in the linear response. They also demonstrate that 2DTS spectra of collective modes can exhibit unique signatures that defy intuition from nuclear magnetic resonance, which may indicate, for example, the presence of dynamics beyond the mean-field approximation.

Phys.

Phys.
