Deformations of the boundary theory of the square-lattice AKLT model

John Martyn, Kohtaro Kato, and Angelo Lucia

Phys. Rev. B 102, 035121 (2020) - Published 10 July, 2020

It remains an open problem to prove the existence of a spectral gap in the 2D square-lattice Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model. Here, the authors express the boundary state of the 2D AKLT model in terms of a classical loop model. By simulating the loop model and numerically analyzing the AKLT boundary state, the authors evidence a spectral gap in the square-lattice AKLT model. In addition, the authors vary the parameters of the loop model and study its three distinct phases.

Eightfold fermionic excitation in a charge density wave compound

Phys. Rev. B 102, 035125 (2020) - Published 14 July, 2020

The 230 space group symmetries of three-dimensional crystal lattices permit the existence of quasiparticle excitations beyond the standard model of high-energy physics. Here, the authors propose that the TaTe4 crystal, with a quasi-one-dimensional lattice structure, holds an eightfold degenerate double Dirac point and a fourfold degenerate Dirac point in the charge density wave (CDW) ground state. The calculated band structure is consistent with Shubnikov–de Haas oscillation measurements. Further, an atomic step edge state is detected, suggesting nontrivial topology. This work reveals the CDW-induced topological phases and provides new insight into the interplay between the CDW and fermionic excitations.

Gapless hinge states from adiabatic pumping of axion coupling

Thomas Olsen, Tomáš Rauch, David Vanderbilt, and Ivo Souza

Phys. Rev. B 102, 035166 (2020) - Published 31 July, 2020

This work studies the general features of electronic states at the boundary of an insulator undergoing a cyclic evolution with a nonzero second Chern number. The figure combines two maps of Fermi surfaces, extended to 3D by including the dependence on the cyclic parameter ϕ, in the surface states of z normal (blue) and y normal (red) facets. The authors find that hinges connecting these facets necessarily carry chiral modes when ϕ lies in the gray region between tangent planes, where the surface facets are insulating.

Hofstadter butterfly and the quantum Hall effect in twisted double bilayer graphene

J. A. Crosse, Naoto Nakatsuji, Mikito Koshino, and Pilkyung Moon

Phys. Rev. B 102, 035421 (2020) - Published 15 July, 2020

The two distinct configurations of twisted double bilayer graphene have different valley Chern numbers in spite of the similarity between their band structures. Here, the authors show that such a topological difference results in significantly different energy spectra and valley Hall conductivities in a uniform magnetic field. In addition, the authors show that the lattice symmetry protects the valley degeneracy of the Landau levels in one of the systems, while such degeneracy is absent in the other.

Spin selectivity through time-reversal symmetric helical junctions

Yasuhiro Utsumi, Ora Entin-Wohlman, and Amnon Aharony

Phys. Rev. B 102, 035445 (2020) - Published 30 July, 2020

The observation of chiral-induced spin selectivity in biological molecules still awaits a full theoretical explanation. Many theoretical proposals were limited by Bardarson’s theorem, which forbids spin selectivity for single-channel transport between two terminals coupled by a time-reversal symmetric Hamiltonian. This paper offers a new possible explanation: spin selectivity can arise for helical molecules with only the time-reversal symmetric intra-atomic spin-orbit interaction, provided that the helical chain has two orbital states, e.g., the carbon p states.
