Dynamics of photodoped charge transfer insulators

Denis Golež, Lewin Boehnke, Martin Eckstein, and Philipp Werner

Phys. Rev. B 100, 041111(R) (2019) - Published 17 July, 2019

Cuprate superconductors remain a mysterious and intensely studied class of materials. New insights into their properties may be obtained by driving these systems out of equilibrium by strong laser pulses. Up to now, most theoretical works on photoexcited cuprates have employed a minimalistic single-band description of these complex materials. In order to treat cuprates and other charge transfer insulators more realistically, the authors develop a multiband theoretical scheme based on GW+EDMFT and Hartree-Fock+EDMFT and apply it to the paradigmatic Emery model. They demonstrate that photoexcitations across the charge transfer gap lead to a strong renormalization of this gap by relative band shifts as well as a substantial broadening of the bands. Comparison with several experimental probes on cuprates, e.g., time-resolved ARPES or optical experiments, shows a remarkable agreement with these simulation results. The new theoretical framework opens a path to explore optical manipulations in charge transfer insulators.

Imaging Dirac fermions flow through a circular Veselago lens

B. Brun, N. Moreau, S. Somanchi, V.-H. Nguyen, K. Watanabe, T. Taniguchi, J.-C. Charlier, C. Stampfer, and B. Hackens

Phys. Rev. B 100, 041401(R) (2019) - Published 3 July, 2019

Simulations and experiments are combined to visualize current density through a circular graphene pn junction, formed by biasing the metallic tip of an atomic force microscope. To image current density, the tip is moved around a graphene constriction, acting as a detector probing a subset of trajectories depending on the tip position with respect to the constriction. The results reveal the crucial role of junction smoothness on current focusing and anti-focusing, thereby establishing the technique as a new tool for electron optics in graphene.

Experimental search for the origin of low-energy modes in topological materials

Point-contact spectroscopy of several topological materials reveals a low-bias conductance peak with Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer criticality. However, no surface or bulk superconductivity accompanies these Andreev reflection type of spectra. Here, the authors show, by studying Ag/Pb1−x−ySnyMnxTe junctions, that the low-bias anomaly is immune to doping with paramagnetic or ferromagnetic Mn impurities. They assign the low-temperature phase either to superconducting nanoprecipitates, not however detected within their experimental resolution, or to a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-type of states formed by correlation-driven instability of 1D topological flat bands residing at edges of surface terraces.

Symmetry-enforced fractonicity and two-dimensional quantum crystal melting

Ajesh Kumar and Andrew C. Potter

Phys. Rev. B 100, 045119 (2019) - Published 15 July, 2019

Utilizing a dual description of two-dimensional elasticity theory as a rank-2 tensor gauge theory, the authors show that zero-temperature quantum melting of a two-dimensional crystal differs crucially from the Halperin-Nelson thermal melting scenario. This is due to the particle number conservation symmetry enforced dislocation glide constraint, or fractonicity. The authors show that quantum crystal fluctuations favor a supersolid phase before melting can occur and, furthermore, discuss applications to the quantum melting of a vortex-lattice and charge-stripe order in a metal.

Hamiltonian symmetries in auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations for electronic structure

Quantum Monte Carlo simulations provide a powerful tool to compute static properties of quantum many-particle models and realistic systems. Here, the authors present a technique to reduce the computational cost of computing ground-state energies, properties, and correlation functions in the framework of the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method. Universal divergence of the Rényi entropy of a thinly sliced torus at the Ising fixed point

Bohdan Kulchytskyy, Lauren E. Hayward Sierens, and Roger G. Melko

Phys. Rev. B 100, 045139 (2019) - Published 26 July, 2019

Entanglement entropies can conceal novel universal features that underlie a quantum phase transition. The universal content is determined by the geometry of the boundary between two entangled regions. In the quantum Monte Carlo simulations here, the authors numerically extract a universal number that arises at a quantum phase transition in the two-dimensional quantum Ising model. This universal number, measured when a two-dimensional torus is partitioned with a thin cylindrical strip, is so far lacking a comprehensive theoretical interpretation.
