In the field of magnetism, spin waves are a subject of great interest for fundamental and application-oriented research. Time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, a technique that allows for direct spin-wave imaging below the optical resolution limit, is usually limited to thin layers deposited on x-ray transparent membranes. Here, the authors report on a preparation routine that makes single-crystalline materials accessible to this powerful technique. The latter is subsequently implemented on the ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet, where spin waves down to 100-nm wavelength are observed.

Time- and momentum-resolved phonon population dynamics with ultrafast electron diffuse scattering

Laurent P. René de Cotret, Jan-Hendrik Pöhls, Mark J. Stern, Martin R. Otto, Mark Sutton, and Bradley J. Siwick

Phys. Rev. B 100, 214115 (2019) - Published 19 December, 2019

The coupling within and between lattice and charge degrees of freedom is central to a diverse range of transport and ordering phenomena in materials, from superconductivity to charge density waves. Here, the authors show how ultrafast electron diffuse scattering (UEDS) tracks energy flows – across the entire Brillouin zone – between electrons and phonons and within the phonon system itself. The nonequilibrium phonon populations determined by UEDS are used to extract momentum- and mode-dependent electron-phonon and phonon-phonon coupling constants.

Comparing many-body localization lengths via nonperturbative construction of local integrals of motion

Pai Peng (彭湃), Zeyang Li, Haoxiong Yan, Ken Xuan Wei, and Paola Cappellaro

Phys. Rev. B 100, 214203 (2019) - Published 13 December, 2019

Many interesting properties of many-body localization (MBL) can be understood using a phenomenological model, involving local integrals of motion (LIOMs). Usually, LIOMs can only be computed approximately. Here, the authors explicitly compute a complete set of LIOMs nonperturbatively by maximizing their overlap with physical spin operators. The scheme is immune to accidental resonances and can be applied even at the phase transition point, providing a powerful tool to study microscopic features of MBL as characterized by various localization lengths.

Ab initio analysis of magnetic properties of the prototype B20 chiral magnet FeGe

S. Grytsiuk, M. Hoffmann, J.-P. Hanke, P. Mavropoulos, Y. Mokrousov, G. Bihlmayer, and S. Blügel

Phys. Rev. B 100, 214406 (2019) - Published 2 December, 2019

The FeGe compound in the B20 phase is a prototype of a bulk chiral magnet exhibiting helical spirals, skyrmion lattices, and individual skyrmions. Using different electronic-structure methods, different exchange correlation potentials, and focusing on computational and structural details, the authors provide consistent results for the period of the helical ground state structure, which are significantly larger with respect to the unequivocally determined experimental values. The authors speculate that the well-known relation between micromagnetic parameters and helix period is not valid for these compounds.

Continuous microwave hole burning and population oscillations in a diamond spin ensemble

Haitham A. R. El-Ella, Alexander Huck, and Ulrik L. Andersen

Phys. Rev. B 100, 214407 (2019) - Published 2 December, 2019

Dense nitrogen-vacancy spin ensembles in diamond are exciting systems for exploring novel collective spin states and for advancing quantum-limited metrology and information technology. However, severe inhomogeneous broadening usually accompanies increasing densities, making ensemble characterization and control challenging when using conventional pulsed multiresonance protocols. Here, the authors demonstrate the utility of employing a continuous-wave double-resonance scheme and of generating spin-ensemble population oscillations. Through this approach, some unexpected aspects of the inhomogeneous broadening mechanism are revealed, while coupled nuclear spins are detected at energies that are challenging to measure via conventional pulsed schemes.

Counterrotating magnetic order in the honeycomb layers of NaNi2BiO6−δ

The exotic Kitaev spin liquid state emerges from a particular form of anisotropic magnetic exchange on the honeycomb lattice. Here, the authors use neutron scattering, electron spin resonance, and density functional theory to show that bond-anisotropic Kitaev exchange exists in between Ni3+ ions in the honeycomb layers of NaNi2BiO5.66. This magnetic exchange produces a complex counterrotating low-temperature magnetic order with 120° in-plane order in this compound. These results demonstrate that Kitaev physics can be found in 3d transition ion materials.
