Abstract
A theory of magnetoelastic effects in ferromagnetic materials is presented. In particular, the effects of electron and nuclear spins on the velocity and attenuation of certain acoustic modes in ferromagnetic materials are obtained. Continuum (Bloch and magnetoelastic) equations which include a variety of forms for spin relaxation are used in the derivation. Detailed results are presented for disk-shaped cubic and uniaxial substances. Numerical estimates for Ni, Fe, and Co suggest that acoustic magnetic resonance should be an especially important technique in studying ferromagnetic metals where the skin effect makes electromagnetic experiments difficult to interpret.
