Abstract
Defect-induced one-phonon absorption of far-infrared radiation is utilized to generate a nonequilibrium phonon population in . We observe that the nonequilibrium phonon population stimulates energy transfer between the and the stoichiometric sites of the ion. We investigate both the spectral and temporal dynamics associated with this process and compare the data to a simple rate-equation model. An upper limit of (1.9±0.2)× for the main-site transfer rate is determined.
