Abstract
The residual population and the corresponding dipole moment of two-level systems in glasses for an arbitrary cooling schedule are derived. The expression for the freezing temperature is obtained, and the width of the transition region, where freezing takes place, is shown to be much smaller than the freezing temperature. The residual macroscopic polarization for both the field-cooled case and the zero-field-cooled case with subsequent heating in the finite field is calculated, and possible relevant experiments on glasses in a static electric field are discussed.
