Ultracold atoms are controlled to investigate the emergence of chaos in the paradigmatic quantum kicked top model. The atoms are transformed into a synthetic spin, which offers a high degree of tunability between the quantum and classical limit, i.e., from a space of suppressed chaos to one where it begins to develop.

Phys. Rev. A 100, 012512 (2019) - Published 18 July, 2019

Magnetic moments of clusters have been measured for about 30 years by Stern-Gerlach experiments, but the interpretation of the results on small clusters at low temperatures is still under debate. In this study, the authors develop a microscopic model reproducing their experimental results, thereby providing a tool to further study the magnetism of free nanoparticles.
