The dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of photons is investigated experimentally and theoretically. An oscillatory behavior of the second-order photon number correlation function is observed in two-dimensional photon gases in a dye-filled optical microcavity and explained by a theoretical model derived from nonlinear rate equations. This behavior is traced back to the weakly driven-dissipative nature of the system, leading to a breaking of time-reversal symmetry.

It is shown that a novel “epistemically restricted phase-space distribution,” directly derivable from the wave function, can be operationally determined by a weak measurement of momentum followed by postselection on position. The epistemically restricted phase-space representation thereby reveals deep links between a specific epistemic restriction manifesting transparently quantum uncertainty in classical phase space, weak momentum value, and complex wave function.

Addressing the computational power of adiabatic quantum algorithms is a big challenge and simplified symmetric systems are often used to advance in this arena. Here, a more realistic and less symmetrical system is analyzed using a tight-binding approach, and a toy model is constructed to provide insight into two traditional problems: adiabatic search in an unstructured environment and adiabatic simulation of ground states.
