Gianbiagio Curato (Cybersecurity Architect, Intesa Sanpaolo), lead author of the first replication study published in APS Open Science, discusses the process, challenges, and value of reproducible research. The authors reproduced and benchmarked three approaches to semiprime factorization using quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO): simulated quantum annealing (SQA), simulated annealing (SA), and asynchronous parallel simulated annealing (A-PSA). Their study reached the 8-million-scale benchmark previously tackled with quantum annealing hardware—all using ordinary CPUs. The work highlights how replication can test computational results and reproducibility, examine methodology, and strengthen confidence in scientific findings.
