A twisted bundle of two-dimensionally ordered filaments with a single off-center defect, or disclination, in side view (left) and cross section (right). Contrary to expectation, when defects are present, twisted and contorted bundle geometries provide a more uniform spacing of filaments than can be achieved in bundles of straight filaments.
