Origin of Misleading Convergence in Self-Consistent Many-Electron Theories: Fundamental Aspects and Practical Implications

Abstract
Self-consistent approaches in many-electron problems typically converge to an unphysical solution in strongly correlated regimes. By deriving the mathematical condition for the stability of the physical solution, we unveil the precise relation between two distinct issues previously considered equivalent: the misleading convergence in self-consistent schemes and the multivaluedness of the Luttinger-Ward functional. Although these problems are fundamentally linked through the divergences of the irreducible vertex function, we show that misleading convergence can occur even in the absence of such divergences. Eventually, a systematic procedure for stabilizing the physical solution is proposed.

Precisely, it was proven that the crossing of two solutions of the equation implies a vertex divergence. However, the existence of multiple solutions for this equation originates from the multivaluedness of the LWF.

Albeit or a slightly different quantity, i.e. for , instead of . Note that while the pseudo-divergences have algorithmic consequences, their physical interpretation remains still unclear.
Note that while is analytically known for the ZP model, it is not for the HA, therefore the CT-INT solver [82] of TRIQS [83] is used to calculate for the HA. Some of the results have also been checked by using the CT-HYB solver [82] of w2dynamics [84] together with the sparse-ir library [85]. The physical Green’s function is analytically known for both models.

Another difference is that the misleading convergence to an unphysical solution now happens discontinuously (see the Supplemental Material [66]).
The explicit expression of through the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of eventually provides a rigorous justification of the ad hoc “scheme B,” introduced in Ref. [34] to stabilize the physical solution of the HA after the first vertex divergence.
Note that we only show data for the ZP model here, as the map is only known perturbatively for the HA.
