Understanding how angular momentum is exchanged between different degrees of freedom has long been a subject of fundamental interest, as represented by the Einstein-de Haas effect in a ferromagnet, in which a change of rotational speed of the rigid body is induced by a change of magnetization. Here, we report the imprinting of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light to a superconductor, a macroscopic quantum state of fermionic condensate, through the Higgs mode excitation by a terahertz (THz) vortex beam. By using spatiotemporally resolved THz-pump and THz-probe spectroscopy, we observe a rotating order parameter oscillation in which the phase structure of the vortex beam is imprinted onto the Higgs mode. Time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau analysis shows that the rotating Higgs mode carries a finite OAM. This work opens a pathway for imprinting OAM of light onto a superconductor and manipulating its order parameter.
