The Mass of Mg22

Abstract

Mass measurements with a relative precision of better than 1.5×108 were performed on Mg22 and its reaction partners Na21 and Na22 with the ISOLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer at CERN, yielding the mass excesses D(Mg22)=399.92(27)   keV, D(Na21)=2184.71(21)keV, and D(Na22)=5181.56(16)keV. The importance of these results is twofold. First, a comparative half-life (Ft value) has been obtained for the superallowed β decay of Mg22 to further test the conserved-vector-current hypothesis. Second, the resonance energy for the Na21 proton capture reaction has been independently determined, allowing direct comparisons of observable γ radiation in nova explosions with the yield expected from models.

Heating up of Superconductors

APS and CERN Sign Open Access Agreement for SCOAP3

APS and CERN, the host organization of SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics), have signed an agreement to make the high-energy physics (HEP) articles published in three leading APS journals open access beginning January 1, 2018. This agreement acts to support the publishing of open access content for wider benefit of the HEP community.
