Abstract

Two identical neutral atoms, one of which is in an excited internal state, exhibit suppressed and enhanced collective spontaneous emission when prepared in subradiant and super-radiant Dicke states, respectively. A single atom-pair initialized in such a highly entangled state interacts via long-range dipolar forces, arising from resonant virtual-photon exchange processes. These states have been studied in long-range alkali, and long-range alkali–Earth dimers in both bonding as well as antibonding orbitals. We here show that a study of these dimers at the level of a single atom- pair (a single molecule) offers possibilities to gain insights into the dynamics of subradiant (“dark”) Dicke states, including the antibonding subradiant longitudinally polarized Dicke state. We also propose to measure the repulsive forces on the quantum level directly, by monitoring the resultant atomic trajectories, whose expectation values follow the Ehrenfest theorem. For the attractive polarization, we calculate the quantum dynamics of the entangled long-range dimer prepared in a coherent superposition of long-range bound states. The detection of the polarization-dependent forces via different cycling transitions, before and after decay to the ground state, is discussed.
