Using cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy, we measured the electron velocity distribution with respect to the nuclear scattering plane for the transfer ionization reaction and were able to separate events corresponding to the final states , and via energy conservation analysis. Our comparison of the present data across the three final states, as well as with previous measurements using a helium target, shows that the angular momentum of the removed electrons has only a minor influence on the momentum distribution. In addition to direct ionization, two-step processes also occur, in which highly excited states of are first populated and subsequently autoionize. These processes lead to the emission of electrons with energies as low as a few hundred meV. For the final state, we observed a distinct emission line located at an electron energy of and tentatively assigned it to . This line is barely visible in photoionization experiments and has not been assigned so far.
