Abstract

Nonlinear Compton scattering holds great promise for creating powerful narrow-band sources of high-energy radiation. However, a spectral broadening of the harmonics arises for laser pulses with a realistic envelope due to inhomogeneous light pressure, reducing the source brightness. To effectively use the nonlinear Compton scattering, a rectangular laser pulse shape is more favorable. In this Letter, a pulse-stacking method is studied to obtain a close-to-rectangular envelope and a narrow-band Compton source in the nonlinear regime. The impact of stacking errors in amplitude, phase, and delay on the source brightness is investigated. A method is presented to obtain a multicolor gamma source.
