Abstract
We demonstrate that a nonmagnetic silicon nanoparticle dimer can scatter visible light as a pure magnetic scatterer under plane-wave illumination, with magnetic resonance dominant and electric dipole responses suppressed. This is achieved by spectrally overlapping the magnetic dipole resonance with the electric toroidal and magnetic quadrupole modes. Then the destructive interference between the Cartesian electric dipole and the electric toroidal mode suppresses the spherical electric dipole response and thus generates a nonradiating anapole mode, enabling ideal magnetic resonance scattering with overlapping magnetic dipole and quadrupole responses in the far field. Moreover, the wavelengths of magnetic resonance responses are tunable in the visible light range.
