Abstract
The cross section for the excitation of the lowest electronic excited state of the hydrogen molecular ion, , by electron impact has been computed. The calculation employs the Born approximation and includes exchange effects according to the procedure developed by Bell and Moiseiwitsch. In contrast to the results of a previous calculation, the inclusion of exchange produces only a small increase in the cross section near threshold.
