Publishing in the Physical Review journals on a gold open access basis enables researchers to comply with most – if not all – of the current open access policies of funders.
Publishing in the Physical Review journals on a subscription basis is congruent with the policies of some funders, including major funders of physical sciences research in the US and Japan that require archiving the Accepted Manuscript in an open repository following a 12-month embargo.
Some researchers are required by their funders – including UKRI and other members of Coalition S that have adopted the Rights Retention Strategy – to archive a peer-reviewed version of their article in an open repository immediately upon publication and under a CC BY license. Choosing to publish on a subscription basis generally will not enable authors to comply with such policies. Researchers subject to rights retention policy compliance should publish in the Physical Review journals on a gold open access basis, which supports authors facing such requirements by enabling the immediate deposit of versions of the article, including the Accepted Manuscript, into an open repository under the terms of a CC BY license.
