Flocking with discrete symmetry: The two-dimensional active Ising model

A. P. Solon and J. Tailleur

Phys. Rev. E 92, 042119 (2015) - Published 8 October, 2015

The authors characterize in detail the transition to collective motion in a two-dimensional active Ising model with discrete directional symmetry. In addition to performing numerical simulations, they develop an analytical description using a refined mean-field approximation of a liquid-gas transition.

Scaling behavior of coarsening Faraday heaps

Henk Jan van Gerner, Ko van der Weele, Devaraj van der Meer, and Martin A. van der Hoef

Phys. Rev. E 92, 042203 (2015) - Published 16 October, 2015

When a bed of sand is vertically shaken, many small heaps form which then merge over time until they eventually form one large heap. The authors analyze the scaling behavior of the number and average size of the heaps with time, and find that it depends on their connectivity as the merging process takes place. This is reminiscent of other phase transition behaviors, such as coarsening and domain growth.

Scaling of liquid-drop impact craters in wet granular media

Qianyun Zhang, Ming Gao, Runchen Zhao, and Xiang Cheng

Phys. Rev. E 92, 042205 (2015) - Published 26 October, 2015

This study explores the physics of liquid drops impacting on wet granular substrates. The authors study the morphology of the resulting craters as a function of the drop size, the impact energy, and the water content of the substrate, and find scaling behaviors that result from the interplay between the drop inertia and the yield stress of the granular bed. These results may have implications in understanding geological and agricultural processes.

Oscillatory cellular patterns in three-dimensional directional solidification

D. Tourret, J.-M. Debierre, Y. Song, F. L. Mota, N. Bergeon, R. Guérin, R. Trivedi, B. Billia, and A. Karma

Phys. Rev. E 92, 042401 (2015) - Published 7 October, 2015

The authors report on the oscillation patterns of rounded structures formed at the solid-liquid interface in directional solidification, by performing experiments in gravity-reduced conditions aboard the International Space Station. They complement their observations with a phase-field theoretical approach that successfully reproduces the main feature of their observations, namely the onset of a so-called breathing mode that, for large samples, does not exhibit long-ranged coherence.

Stabilization of three-dimensional scroll waves and suppression of spatiotemporal chaos by heterogeneities

Florian Spreckelsen, Daniel Hornung, Oliver Steinbock, Ulrich Parlitz, and Stefan Luther

Phys. Rev. E 92, 042920 (2015) - Published 22 October, 2015

The authors investigate the effect of heterogeneities on scroll waves in a model of a three-dimensional excitable medium. They find that thin rodlike heterogeneities stabilize the waves and suppress otherwise developing spatiotemporal chaos.

Forces acting on a small particle in an acoustical field in a thermoviscous fluid

Jonas T. Karlsen and Henrik Bruus

Phys. Rev. E 92, 043010 (2015) - Published 12 October, 2015

This paper explores the interaction of an acoustic field with emulsions and suspensions of small particles, in a viscous medium including heat and thermal effects. The authors derive expressions for the acoustic radiation force, and find a relevant coupling between the material characteristics and the particle size that dramatically influences the behavior of the particles under acoustic perturbations.

Direct relations between morphology and transport in Boolean models

Christian Scholz, Frank Wirner, Michael A. Klatt, Daniel Hirneise, Gerd E. Schröder-Turk, Klaus Mecke, and Clemens Bechinger

Phys. Rev. E 92, 043023 (2015) - Published 30 October, 2015

The authors combine experiment, theory, and simulations to study the relationship between morphology and permeability in models consisting of overlapping circular or elliptical grains. They point out how their models may also apply to different types of structures.

The authors study the morphology of the resulting craters as a function of the drop size, the impact energy, and the water content of the substrate, and find scaling behaviors that result from the interplay between the drop inertia and the yield stress of the granular bed. These results may have implications in understanding geological and agricultural processes.

The authors derive expressions for the acoustic radiation force, and find a relevant coupling between the material characteristics and the particle size that dramatically influences the behavior of the particles under acoustic perturbations.
