Quadrupole states and the interacting boson approximation

Abstract

A schematic shell model calculation is used to analyze the adequacy of the interacting boson approximation as a function of the quadrupole interaction strength V. It is found that an interacting boson basis truncation approximation provides a good description of the nuclear ground state, but a poor one of moderately high angular momentum states, for all values of V. An alternate basis truncation scheme is proposed.
