Thermal transport and Wiedemann-Franz law in the disordered Fermi liquid

G. Schwiete and A. M. Finkel'stein

Phys. Rev. B 90, 060201(R) (2014) - Published 13 August, 2014

The field theoretic framework of nonlinear sigma models in the presence of gravitational potentials has been used to study disordered Fermi liquids. The authors demonstrate that the Wiedemann-Franz law remains valid despite the presence of interactions and slow diffusive modes.

Anomalous organic magnetoresistance from competing carrier-spin-dependent interactions with localized electronic and nuclear spins

Y. Wang, N. J. Harmon, K. Sahin-Tiras, M. Wohlgenannt, and M. E. Flatté

Phys. Rev. B 90, 060204(R) (2014) - Published 21 August, 2014

Spin transport in organic semiconductors has garnered increased interest in the last decade due in part to the large room temperature organic magnetoresistance (OMAR) effect. This effect originates from the nuclear interactions with bottlenecked carrier spin pairs which are suppressed by applied fields. In this article the authors describe a new regime for low-field magnetoresistance in organic semiconductors, in which the spin-relaxing effects of localized nuclear spins and electronic spins interfere. In addition to elucidating the fundamental mechanisms of OMAR, this result has implications for improving the design of organic-based devices.

Analysis of the noise spectra from oxidized superparamagnetic nanoparticles

S. I. Woods, Snorri Ingvarsson, Shouheng Sun, and J. R. Kirtley

Phys. Rev. B 90, 060403(R) (2014) - Published 18 August, 2014

A quantitative understanding of ferromagnetism and exchange bias in magnetic nanoparticle systems is key to optimizing their performance. In this paper the authors demonstrate a measurement method using a micro-SQUID sensor in order to obtain noise spectra for analysing exchange bias in magnetic nanoparticles as a function of the oxidation state.

Experimental realization of a quantum breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet

K. Kimura, S. Nakatsuji, and T. Kimura

Phys. Rev. B 90, 060414(R) (2014) - Published 29 August, 2014

Several pyrochlore antiferromagnets are being considered as candidate materials where geometrical frustration may lead to quantum spin-liquid states. In a “breathing” pyrochlore lattice systems (see PRL 110, 097203 (2013)) the spins occupy the vertices of alternating tetrahedra of different size that are characterized by different exchange parameters J and J.

Negative Hall coefficient of ultrathin niobium in Si/Nb/Si trilayers

I. Zaytseva, O. Abal'oshev, P. Dłużewski, W. Paszkowicz, L. Y. Zhu, C. L. Chien, M. Kończykowski, and Marta Z. Cieplak

Phys. Rev. B 90, 060505(R) (2014) - Published 22 August, 2014

Detailed structural and transport characterization of ultrathin niobium films, as thin as 1.1 nm, reveals a change of the Hall coefficient sign from positive to negative in the thinnest films. This finding may have implications for understanding of disappearance of superconductivity in the ultrathin film limit.
