The average rate difference between a clock on the earth and a clock in an "elliptic satellite" is found to be dependent only on the average specific kinetic energy of the satellite and the average gravitational potential of the satellite, . By means of the virial theorem, and are shown to be dependent only on the major axis, , of the satellite orbit, giving the result: where and are the periodic times read on the satellite clock and the earth clock, respectively, and is the radius of the earth.
