Materials design and discovery is an emerging area in Materials Science and Materials Physics. This field has grown rapidly in recent years and is increasingly being carried out in a way that transcends conventional subject boundaries. The main goals of this workshop are to bring together selected senior and early career theorists and experimentalists from this multidisciplinary field, in an informal intellectual setting conducive to assessing the status and potential future of the new directions in material design and discovery as they start to “emerge from the noise;” facilitate communication between researchers moving into those areas from different angles and with different expertise, such as condensed-matter physicists, soft matter physicists, material physicists, material chemists, material scientists, material engineers, and others; bring the Physical Review editorial team up to speed on these new developments and help assess related editorial needs.
Materials design and discovery. New methods: computational, experimental, coupled computational & experimental methods. Machine learning and high-throughput techniques. Data mining. Concepts of compound prediction and the science of synthesis. Application to materials for energy harvesting, storage, and generation, ferroelectrics, multiferroics, magnetic materials, topological materials, semiconducting materials, and superconducting materials.
